What's the difference between text and graphics for WebTycho?

Text requires that the people viewing your entry have the "arial unicode ms" font installed on their pc (see below). If they do not, they will see a place-holder, like a rectangle, instead of your symbol. Graphics requires that the people viewing your entry do not have their browser set to load graphics from the originating site only.

What's the difference between graphics and text for Word?

Graphics will be something anyone who can view Word documents will be able to see. Text requires that the people viewing your document have the "arial unicode ms" font installed on their pc (see below). If they do not, they will see a place-holder, like a rectangle, instead of your symbol.

How do I force a new line in the middle of my text?

Use <BR> in your text where you want the line break.

How would I use this when I'm not connected to the internet?

Download this file, unzip all files into the same directory, open ipa_writer.html. The zip file has all the graphics and the IPA Writer.

What if it doesn't work?

Do you have your JavaScript turned on? The IPA Writer a quick hack done while I should have been working on my conferences and paper. I only tested it in Firebird (old FireFox) and IE 6.

Font: arial unicode ms

This is UMUC's font choice in their sample. It is a closed-source, proprietary font owned and distributed by Microsoft and you have to pay a lot for it because it only comes with some larger product.

If you are seeing a place-holding character (square or question mark or funny kid style building block) instead of the actual symbol in Word or WebTycho, "arial unicode ms" is probably not installed on your PC.

You can override this setting by going to Internet Options, Fonts, and selecting for the language script, Latin based, and for the font, "Lucida Sans Unicode". (Mozilla Firebird automatically makes the translation for you.) Lucida Sans Unicode is also a Microsoft font and may not be installed on your computer despite rumors that it "comes with Windows". Don't get me started on "Why it's time to stop using Microsoft products".

The easiest way to check and see if you have these fonts on your computer is to open MS Word and look in the font selection.

If you have neither one, you can try Doulos SIL (a free font) http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?site_id=nrsi&item_id=DoulosSIL_download#1fd0063a

To install a font, just unzip (http://www.winzip.com/) the downloaded file and put the .ttf in your truetype font directory which can be easily found by using find file for *.ttf. On my Windows 2000 machine, my font directory is C:\WINNT\Fonts.

If you are using Linux, mine is still showing cute little cubes and I've not had time to figure out where to hide more fonts yet, so I don't have any advice (If you have any, let me know!).

Summary:

  1. Find out if you have "Arial Unicode MS" by looking in the MS Word font list.
  2. If not, find out if you have "Lucida Sans Unicode" by looking in the MS Word font list.
  3. If not, download "Doulos SIL" (link above), and install it by copying the .ttf file into your font directory.
  4. Open Internet Explorer (Please download and use Mozilla Firefox instead: http://www.mozilla.org/download.html) and change the Tools | Internet Options | Fonts to use whichever of these 3 fonts you have installed.

Misc

What's with the : numbers : ?

The numbers you see are the ASCII unicode for the characters. The colons are used when the view is created.

Why is everything pink?

I liked it in pink. My program. My color. Change it if you want.

How do I use the IPA Writer?

Type in the text box, click on things, click "Create Views".

Why is the font tag used in the html for graphics section?

If the browser has graphics turned off, this shows the symbols if the person has the right fonts installed.
