Nirvana and Kit cautiously approached
the child in the alley. She was curled up and moaning, her back
to the dead-end wall.
"Think she's okay?" Kit
asked, unable to keep the concern from her voice. She was within
six feet of the tiny figure, arm already outstretched in a comforting
gesture.
Nirvana blinked and stared at the
child again. For a second, she thought she saw bristles coming
from the child's arms. Was it a trick of the light, or...
"Kit." she said quickly,
suddenly looking around. "Let's get out of here."
"We can't just abandon a child-"
Kit started.
"But we can save our own skins,"
Nirvana finished as the child stood up and made it clear Nirvana
wasn't seeing things after all.
One of the strangest, and yet most dangerous,
Spectres Orpheus has come across. Fly-by-nights are given their
name for the manner in which they lure innocent spirits and Orpheus
agents into their grasp, and then spring on them. One will approach
what appears to be a perfectly normal spirit, stranded or crying
out for help. But when a target becomes close enough, front becomes
back and back becomes front and what may have been an innocent
child or a beaten woman becomes something out of your worst nightmares.
Fly-by-nights somehow manage to hide
all their thorns and horrors while
disguised as a normal spirit, making them all the more dangerous.
They can appear as both hues and spirits, and may even have trace
amounts of vitality shining through them. Some debate as to if
they are totally Spectres, or simply Spectres wearing other ghosts
as a disguise of sorts.
Fly-by-nights are almost always bait
into a trap of other Spectres, and are never the mastermind.
Once the trap has sprung, the fly-by-night will rush to the sidelines
as soon as possible and laugh in joy at the havoc that is wreaked,
whether the Spectre or the spirit is winning. Make no mistake,
however; fly-by-nights will attack if provoked, and they are
formidable enemies.
